Melissa Wasserfall

I started practicing Ashtanga yoga as a daily practice at The Yoga Centre, Edinburgh under the direction of Hamish Hendry and then became a teacher there, completing my teacher training in 1999. I am a direct student of Sri K.Pattabhi Jois and currently practice primary, second and some third series.

I have diplomas in sports and remedial massage, phytotherapy (the study of herbs), energy healing and holographic repatterning. Whilst I focus almost exclusively on yoga teaching now, all of these trainings have enabled me to fine tune my ability to read people’s bodies, and to see where each individual student needs particular attention.

My aim as a teacher is to bring my knowledge of yoga and the musculo-skeletal system to my classes, so that the student can practice from a place of knowledge and confidence.

The studio can only accommodate a certain number of people and I have chosen to keep the classes smaller so that I can develop a relationship with each student and address their needs to the best of my ability.

Ashtanga yoga can be a very masculine practice and I aim to balance that with the feminine aspect of surrender and softening.

Since the birth of my children, the first in 2005, I have been teaching pre and post natal yoga as well as mom and baby yoga. I aim to provide comprehensive information on all aspects of childbirth, during pregnancy and after. I am Y.A.A certified and currently teach first and second series Ashtanga yoga. I try to return to Mysore, India, whenever possible to continue my studies with Pattabhi Jois (Guruji) and am currently working towards my authorization from A. Y. R. I (The Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India) .

I am passionate about yoga and it’s benefits, which I experience first hand through my own practice every day, and I hope to ignite and impart this to my students, awakening in them their own self knowledge and wisdom, which exists in each of us. The yoga practice is the real teacher.

I have been studying Ashtanga Yoga for over 11 years and have been involved with sports for over 25 years. The practice of Ashtanga Yoga has drawn me into a close connection with my teacher Nancy Gilgoff of Maui, one of the first Westerners to practice Ashtanga Yoga with Pattabhi Jois, the founder of traditional Ashtanga Yoga. I continue to practice with Nancy, Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy on a regular basis to learn the ancient practices of yoga and their traditional style of teaching.

Currently I practice first, second and part of third series of Ashtanga Yoga and teach first and second series classes as well as basic breath work, meditation, hatha yoga and yin yoga. My studies include asana, pranayama (breath work), meditation, shat karma (yogic cleansings), chanting, Sanskrit and philosophy.

The classes I teach reflect the experience of my daily practice and focus on breath, alignment and core strength as a path to freedom in the energetic body. This focus has propelled my personal healing journey to move through deep injuries I suffered as a high performance diver for Team Canada. My lifelong athletic history with diving, gymnastics, skiing and running enable me to understand movement and how mind/body awareness improves performance and restores balance to injuries.

Foremost I love every moment raising my beautiful daughter Audrey with my loving husband Kristian.
